    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never runs properly In the one year I’ve had this saw I’ve had to return it to the dealer for repairs twice and now it’s not working again and why should I pay another 1/2 the price to repair it again. Very disappointed in this chain saw especially because I was so excited to finally own a Stihl. Complete total junk! Sorry to be so negative about it but these are the facts.1) Impossible to start2) Chain refuses to keep proper tension3) Less powerful than el cheapo brand electric pole saw I own.4) Constantly cutting off.And no I’m not a Stihl hater I own 3 Stihl concrete saws and the Stihl Khombi system with several attachments which all are okay.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible saw Could not get this "easy to start" saw to start. Ended up taking it back to the store and they couldn't get it to start either. Got a full refund. Do not buy!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MS 170 Was a little worried that I should have bought a bigger saw but I was very happy with the power and cutting capability with this saw. It is light weight and starts easy. Perfect for a homeowner with property to manage. Have been through about 8 tanks of fuel so far and the saw has been flawless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always starts and restarts I received training from dealer for the correct procedure on starting and restarting my MS 170 and I made the decision to use only Stihl 2-cycle Moto Mix fuel and bar and chain oil. I have had zero issues starting and restarting and keeping the chain and bar auto oiled using my saw everyday for two weeks on my backyard project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wife's saw We were watching a commercial on Stihl Dealer Days. She says " I would like a little saw that I could help with". I told her I new the one and they are on sale. So off we go to Idaho Rigging in Potlatch, buy A MS170, 6 pack of Oil mix and an extra chain. She loves it. She can start it herself after it's warmed up. Good balance and enough power for a Great G'ma. Our 5th Stihl

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bought new m170 Bought new ms170 and had high hopes. It started out fine but started to bog down in about 1 hour with a downed tree about 9 inches in diameter. I heard that this chainsaw was the name brand to use. Really disappointed
Date published: 2018-06-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The MS 170 As purchased a year ago I have used it many times to cut up downed trees and to fall trees up to about a ft in diameter. This without difficulty! The saw starts promptly even if not used for an extended period. I'd get one for general use but recommend a larger model for over all forrestery use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw is lightweight and easy to use. I purchased my MS170 a couple of weeks ago and I love it. The saw is lightweight and starts easy and cuts like a hot knife through butter. I recommend this saw and Stihl products in general.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent entry level saw Even though the MS 170 is a homeowner's chainsaw, this little beauty stood up to the task at hand and delivered the power needed to get the job done. Being a professional arborist requires dependable tools, and this saw over-performed for what it's suggested use is. I would highly suggest this chainsaw to any homeowner. GREAT value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First ever chainsaw. Works great! This chainsaw is very easy to operate. The safety features are incredibly easy to understand and use while the saw is both running and stopped. Best value possible for my budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for trimming and small trees This is my second one, I completely wore out the first one, and instead of replacing another blade and many other parts because I beat it up so bad, I decided it was worth buying another one. I also have a 250 that I now use for large trees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing little saw I have owned my MS 170 for over 6 years now. It has never failed to start even after sitting unused for 2 years ( no trouble starting it then either). I've only changed the spark plug once and the air filter gets cleaned religiously. I have cut close to 80 cords of wood with this little machine and am truly impressed with it--some for my father-in-law who burns in his outdoor woodburner and other for clean up. I'm currently cutting up 3 cords of hard maple about 18" in diameter. Yes, it sometimes bogs down but just back it off and let it rev back up again and you are good to go. I'm on my second bar and my 6th chain. As long as I don't hit dirt, the chain seems to hold it's edge for a while. I've noticed if I use cheap bar and chain oil or go through bigger wood the bar heats up and will eventually lose paint (The second bar is going strong but the first bar I used cheap bar and chain oil and I lost almost all the paint on it.)Although I would like a heavier duty saw for the bigger stuff, this one still seems to get the job done. It's light weight and it doesn't tire me out.My biggest complaint are chains. You can only sharpen them so many times before having to toss them out, but the chains are relatively inexpensive.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I am not impressed with sthil. Unreliable. I bought the ms170 from a John Deere store thinking it would be a decent product. The first one I bought would not start and I took back and they couldnt start either. They gave me a brand new one and they said they started in the shop. I got home and once again I couldn't start. I called back and they said did you choke it when I got home and I did. They said well you shouldnt have. I thought the purpose of a choke was to start a cold engine. I was able the next day to get it started but I had to take the plug out and let it sit. I apparently flooded it. So now I dont know if it will start now or not when I goto use it. I guess I will try with out choke first. Any other power product I own I have to choke to start. I am not impressed with this brand. I should of just bought a low grade brand. I have had better luck with them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great saw for a homeowner I live in an area where tree limbs fall off every year and this 170 does a great job. When that storm Derecho hit a few years back it took down a tree, The 170 was enough saw to handle that job as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from powerful little chain worth the investment I bought the MS 170 after my electric chain saw motor burned out. I wish I would have purchased it sooner. MS 170 is more powerful, cuts faster and light in weight. Not having to deal with the extension cord is great. I recommend upgrading the bar and chain, it is worth the upgrade cost which was $15. Now I have a chain saw that is both light in weight and powerful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best cut for the money... Hands down! Bought this saw as a throw around machine. More or less just to see what a “cheap” saw with Stihl’s name was worth. Have to say that I am impressed! Starts up and goes to work every time I call on her. Has plenty of power to chew through anything on my fence line or creek bank. If it has Stihl on it, I’m not afraid to abuse it a little. And this saw doesn’t have to be treated like any other saw you will find for the money. The bar is a little sensitive I have found. It will be the first replacement I will make. The engine is strong and reliable so far (less than a gallon of fuel ran through it). To anyone entering the world of gas powered equipment, buy Stihl, maintain it with their parts and it will last a lifetime. I always have to brag on my first Stihl 4-mix string trimmer, over a decade of abuse and hard work and it still starts on the first pull. Proper maintenance and good fuel will make every penny of your investment worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great running and powerful for a small saw. As long as you understand how to start it, this saw runs well and has had no trouble cutting anything thus far. I also have a larger stihl saw. Both cut incredibly well. With the 170, just let the saw cut without trying to "force" it thru the tree. This saw is a dream to carry and maneuver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent light duty saw. I’ve only used the saw for trimming trees and removing a dead 8” diameter Aspen, and it worked very well. Lightweight, starts easily (if you follow the directions), and generally an excellent choice for small jobs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw! For a light saw it has power to spare. Great for trimming branches when you're on a ladder or the ground. Can cut larger trunks too. Great all around saw.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Could have been better Handle broke after first use now throttle cable is exposed. Does not effect performance though. Runs through gas alot quicker than expected. Starts up without a problem. But over all don't get this cheap one spend an extra 100 or 2 to to get the good stihl we all know and love
Date published: 2018-05-29
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Starts and runs every time! The only complaint I have is the small thin chain but I can understand what it's for. Stihl customer service was awesome and sent me a different chain to try and I love it goes through anything have no complaints

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little saw For the money, you can’t beat it. I used this little machine for a job cutting up a neighbor’s tree into firewood and couldn’t be more pleased. Little tough to start when hot.
